Call For Director Proposals – “Come From Away”

Director Applications Being Accepted – “Come From Away”

Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT), an outdoor community theatre in downtown Annapolis, MD, is seeking proposals from potential directors for our 3rd production planned for 2027 – “Come From Away” (MTI – Music Theatre International). We are open to creative settings and interpretations.  This show is scheduled to run August 5 through September 5, 2027.

We are seeking directors who have a passion to direct “under the stars” and understand and appreciate the rewards and challenges of presenting a musical outdoors in our historic setting across from the City Dock in downtown Annapolis.

Proposals should be fully developed with suggested staffing for key roles, if possible, and will be accepted until July 31, 2026. Interviews will begin after August 15th with a goal of presenting recommendations to the Board of Directors shortly thereafter. All proposals will be acknowledged. After review by the Artistic Committee, we may ask for references.

ASGT is committed to nurturing a diverse and vibrant community of artists, volunteers and patrons that actively supports our presence in the community. We strive for professional quality in our community theatre productions and strive to cultivate a welcoming, fun and respectful atmosphere for all. We offer small stipends for key artistic staff positions.

Come From Away

Book, Music and Lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein

Come From Away is a critically acclaimed musical featuring a culturally relevant script accompanied by a deeply moving score by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. The show has earned global success with 37 award nominations, 13 of which resulted in wins, most notably Best New Musical at the 2019 Olivier Awards and Outstanding Musical at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards. The show’s global presence resonates as an uplifting reminder of humanity’s ability to come together, no matter what the circumstances.

Come From Away is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from around the globe, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.
